Law school doesn’t teach you how to do this. I always envisioned having my own law firm. But law school doesn’t teach you how to do that. So my plan was simple: work for a firm for a while, learn how to start my own law firm, then go and do that. Right out of law school I landed a job working for a small boutique law firm thinking at a small firm I would see the operational side. I was so bogged down with client work, I didn’t get to see the operational side of the firm. After a few years, when the opportunity presented itself, I attempted to hang my own shingle. I knew some attorneys who were willing to send cases my way, but I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Which seemed like a lot. Then it hit me…law school taught me how to practice law, but it didn’t teach me how to run a law practice.
Ultimately, I took my shingle down in exchange for a job with the federal government. Now the plan was to spend my spare time learning how to run a law practice and to launch my firm again. That’s just what I did. In 2015, I took everything I learned and started my law firm part time. Once I found my footing I knew I could run the firm full time whenever I was ready to make the complete transition. That time came in September of this year, 7 years after I started the firm. While it didn’t take me 7 years to realize success, it did take me almost that entire time to refine my method. Now I have taken everything I learned that law school didn’t teach me to take control of my time, income, and life.
